Comfortable, Convenient Setting

Dr. Richard Mendelsohn enjoys working with patients of all ages on a multitude of foot and ankle conditions. Widely recognized as a specialist in the treatment of sports and dance injuries, he is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, and also is certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery. In addition, he is a Fellow of the American Society of Podiatric Dermatology and is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association.
Frequently consulted by other physicians for his expertise in the area of sports- and dance-related injuries. He is a clinical advisor and columnist for the American Running and Fitness Association, and serves as a consulting podiatrist for numerous other professional and amateur sports teams.
Dr. Mendelsohn received his undergraduate degree from Emory University in Atlanta and earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from Philadelphia's Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in 1985. He completed his residency in the medical and surgical treatment of theJoot and ankle at Cambridge Hospital in Cambridge, Mass., (an affiliate of the Harvard Medical School).
Married with five children, Dr. Mendelsohn is a passionate hockey fan who enjoys watching and participating in a variety of other sports as well.
Dr. Gary Scheib earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland, where he was a Dean's list student. Following his graduation, he served residencies in primary podiatric' medicine, orthopedics and surgery through the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. During that time, he had the opportunity to work with patients of many ages, backgrounds and health challenges at the Bethesda (Md.) Naval Hospital. Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland, and the Premier Surgical Center in Washington, D.C. He is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association.
Prior to his podiatric studies, Dr. Sheib earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Ball State University in Muncie Indiana, and later attended George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. He spent more than 20 years in retail footwear industry, including an eight-year tenure as a department manager for Nordstrom, Inc., a company nationally recognized for high standards of customer service and satisfaction. He also served more than 10 years as a district manager of a shoe distribution company based in Canton, Massachusetts.
Dr. Sheib, who has always enjoyed helping people and solving problems, believes that successful doctor-patient relationships depend on both medical expertise and communication. Having helped thousands of people over two decades find comfortable, properly-fitting shoes, he gained a unique perspective on the difficulties and frustrations faced every day by those with foot and ankle ailments.
Dr. Sheib enjoys playing golf and fishing. He lives in Paris, Virginia, with his wife, Trisha, and son, Cameron, They share their home with a rather temperamental Jack Russell terrier.
Dr. Charney has been associated with the Family Foot and Ankle Centers for more than 10 years. She is certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Her , specialty areas include diabetic foot care and trauma/ sports injuries. She enjoys working with patients of all . ages, especially pediatric and geriatric populations. She has the distinction of having served on the ethics committees for both Inova Fairfax and Inova Fair Oaks Hospitals,and; has participated in medical ethics seminars throughout the state.
Dr. Charney earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Albright College (Reading, Pennsylvania) in 1989. She earned her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from the Scholl College, of Podiatric Medicine at Finch University (Chicago, Illinois)' in 1993. She completed three years of residency training to include a 1-year rotating podiatric residency at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in WashingtOn, D.C. and a two-year surgical/trauma residency at the Golden Glades Medical Center in North Miami Beach, Fla.
Born in Washington and raised in Montgomery County, Md., Dr. Charney enjoys walking to stay fit and is a two-time participant in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk. She and her husband, Larry, can often be found enjoying their two children, Samuel and Madeline .
Dr. Ashley Mayer was born in Masan, South Korea, but was adopted at an early age into a wonderful family from Scranton, PA. She attended Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, where she majored in Biology and minored in Psychology. Dr. Mayer went on to receive her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. She continued her surgical training in Philadelphia at Temple University Hospital � one of only four-year podiatric surgical residencies in the country. There she was trained extensively in elective forefoot and rearfoot surgery, reconstructive surgery, foot and ankle trauma, and diabetic limb salvage. During her final year, she also served as Chief Resident.
Skilled in the most recent and advanced foot and ankle surgery techniques, Dr. Mayer�s specialties include diabetic wound care/limb salvage and forefoot/rearfoot reconstruction. She believes that open communication is paramount for an effective doctor-patient relationship.
During her time off, she enjoys spending time outdoors, hiking and biking. She is also an enthusiast of the arts, especially ballet and theatre. Most recently she has found a passion for power yoga, which she loves for its restorative effects.
Dr. Mayer is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association, the Virginia Podiatric Medical Association, and the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Dr. Mayer is Board Qualified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.
Dr. Michael L. Petranek is a native of Washington, D.C. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular Biology at Brigham Young University. During the course of his studies, he had a unique opportunity to give volunteer service in Buenos Aires, Argentina for two years. Dr. Petranek continued his education at the California College of Podiatric Medicine where he earned a Doctorate in Podiatric Medicine, graduating with honors.
He completed a rigorous three year surgical residency program at Fairfax and Georgetown University Hospitals. This specialized training enables him to diagnose, treat and provide both conservative and surgical care for injuries, disorders, and diseases of the foot and ankle. Dr. Petranek enjoys working with patients of all ages, giving them relief from their painful symptoms, and helping them return to full functional activity.
Dr. Petranek is board certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association and Virginia Podiatric Medical Association.
Dr. Petranek is fluent in Spanish. He enjoys spending his leisure time camping, boating and participating in outdoor activities with his wife and five children. He can often be found biking on the W&OD trail or enjoying the pool with his family.
